Warning of Council Tax Phone Scam in Scarborough

Warning of Council Tax Phone Scam in Scarborough

Published by Jon Burke at 4:07pm 21st January 2020.

Scarborough Borough Council is warning local residents to be vigilant after some residents have reported receiving suspicious telephone calls from someone claiming to work for the council and telling residents they are entitled to a credit on their Council Tax.

The caller asks security questions and asks for bank account and bank card details. Such calls are not being made by the council or by anyone officially representing the council and they should be treated with extreme caution.

Scarborough Borough Council Director, Nick Edwards, said:

“We would never call anyone to ask for bank account or bank card details for the purposes of a refund. If a credit was ever required, we would issue a credit bill to the resident, which would ask them to contact us in their own time to let us know the details of the bank account they would like the funds crediting to.

Anyone who receives a call they believe to be suspicious should refuse to give any personal or bank account details, hang up and report the call to their bank immediately.”
