Sleights Family To Hold Whitby Blood Cancer Swab Event

A family in Sleights, near Whitby, is still looking for a stem cell match for their son.

June and Mike McCleave's son Peter has Myeloma, a cancer that destroys all the good blood cells and attacks the bones as it moves around the body.

They have organised an event in Whitby for people to go along and take a cheek swab test.

It is tomorrow (Tuesday 14th January) at Eskdale School from 4pm 'til 7pm.

June said:

"It's an opportunity to go along and become a donor for DKMS; and for people like Peter, our son, who is waiting for a match to prolong his life.

In addition, there's going to refreshments, coffee, cake and a tombola, to try and raise some funds, because costs £40 to process each of these sets of swabs."

Mike added:

"You get three swabs and you swab the left hand cheek, the right hand cheek and then all around, they dry and then that's it.

There'll be a DKMS representative and at the end of the session, they'll bag everything up in a box and they'll take it back to London to their laboratory.

All the swabs will be analysed and they will obviously try and get a match for Peter, but it's also getting a match for all the other thousands of people with Myeloma."

June and Mike have been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Karen Liu:

If you can't make tomorrow's event, then you can get a cheek swab test to do at home via: https://www.dkms.org.uk/en/register-now
