Gull Muggings in Scarborough Up Not Down

Gull Muggings in Scarborough Up Not Down

The Chairman of Scarborough's South Bay Traders' Association says there's been an increase in gull muggings - not a fall.

It's after we told you last week the council says nearly half the number were reported to its website in 2019, compared to the two previous years.

However, the council does admit this may have no relevance to actual numbers.

John Senior said:

"We're not aware of a reduction, in fact we're probably aware of an increase and I would just urge Scarborough Council and those involved, but the reason I'm here really is to urge members of the public please - if you see an attack or your family is attacked by gulls, please report it on the website.

The real problem is people feeding the gulls, literally throwing fish and chips and food onto the beach and onto the pavement.

That isn't the problem, it's what the gulls then do and if a child has something in its hand that's edible, or even inedible, it's going to go for that and injuries are caused.

Personally, I treated three injuries at Scarborough Lifeboat station last year and we then had to send them up to Scarborough Hospital."

The figures are to be discussed at a council committee meeting on Wednesday.

You can report a gull mugging on the council's website here
