Special Constables in East Riding Get Benefit

Special Constables in East Riding Get Benefit

Published by Jon Burke at 6:31am 10th January 2020.

At the East Riding of Yorkshire Council meeting this week, Conservative Councillors gave a 25% Council Tax discount to Special Constables, but ignored moves to consider other volunteers in the county.

Independent Group Leader, Councillor Barbara Jefferson, proposed that moves to single out Special Constables for the discount was unfair on other volunteers and the matter should be reviewed by a Scrutiny Committee.

Councillor Jefferson said:

"How can we expect to face our brave volunteers, both on sea and land, when we are apparently selecting one group of volunteers as being more deserving than another without proper consultation and full debate?"

The amendment to consider other volunteers was seconded by Independent Councillor John Whittle, but thrown out by the ruling Conservative Group.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Councillor David Nolan, said:

"We have RNLI lifeboat volunteers putting their lives at risk and yet they are not being considered for a Council Tax discount.

The whole scheme has not been thought through and is unfair."

The move to give Special Constables a 25% discount (50% discount if two or more Special Constables in the household) has been pushed through as a one year trial.

A spokesman for East Riding of Yorkshire Council said:

"It was agreed at Full Council on Wednesday, 9 January that, as part of a pilot scheme to assist Humberside Police with recruitment and retention, a 25% council tax discount would be given to special constables for the 2020/21 financial year, and discussions would be held through an overview and scrutiny committee to consider this council tax discount going forward."

What about all the volunteers in hospitals, charity shops, dial a ride etc.

Is this just a back door method of trying to recruit specials.
