£2,500 Raised At Scarborough's New Year's Day Dip

Published by Karen Liu at 1:48pm 7th January 2020.

More than £2,500 has been raised for Scarborough Lions Club after its annual New Year's Day Dip.

Over 3000 spectators turned up to watch over 160 dippers take to the freezing North Sea waters to help many charitable causes.

Prior to their dash into the water the dippers took part in a fancy dress competition judged by Scarborough’s Mayor Councillor Hazel Lynskey which was followed by Scarborough’s Town Crier, David Birdsdall calling all dippers to order before counting down their dash into the North Sea.

Robert Hunter, Vice-President of Scarborough Lions Club, said:

"A huge thank you to all the dippers and spectators whose generosity on the day enabled us to take over £2500 with more money to come when the Dippers collect their sponsorship money.

As always, all the money donated to Scarborough Lions Club will go to local good causes. 75% of the money collected by the dippers goes to their chosen charity with 25% going to Scarborough Lions.

Thank you also to Paddy Billington, Yorkshire Coast Radio’s ‘Paddy in the Morning’ for entertaining the crowds throughout the morning.

A great day was had by all and we look forward to seeing you all again at our 2021 New Year’s Day Dip."
