East Riding Leisure Partners With Mental Health Charity

East Riding Leisure will be helping turn January RED in partnership with Hull & East Yorkshire Mind.

Red January promotes being active every day - this can be a brisk walk, taking the dog for a walk or something more energetic like a swim, run, jog, class or gym session.

Councillor Shaun Horton, portfolio holder to tourism, culture and leisure, said:

“We all know the physical benefits of any exercise - but did you know the mental health benefits? One in four of us have, or will experience, a mental health problem, so why not make the most of January and start the year as you mean to go on?

January can be a very hard time of year for many, and being active can help improve your mood and overall sense of well-being.”

Hull & East Yorkshire Mind will be visiting East Riding Leisure centres to help raise awareness of the support they offer to those who are living with poor mental health, and those who support them.

Marie-Louise Robinson, the charity's Community Fundraiser, said:

"Being active really does improve your mental health, it gets you out of your comfort zone, out of your house and into the fresh air, it helps you meet other people and socialise; and things like this are all beneficial to our mental health.

So it's about taking care of our minds as well as our bodies.

Doing something as simple as a short walk every day, or a swim, anything that's right for your level of physical activity, it doesn't have to be strenuous running or anything like that; helps you to refocus your thoughts onto positive activities and you're physically doing something so you're distracting your brain from quite negative thoughts."
