Northern Being Stripped Of Franchise Is 'Right' Says Filey MP

Filey's MP has been reacting to Northern being stripped of its rail franchise.

The company runs trains from Scarborough to Hull via Filey and Bridlington and Whitby to Middlesbrough.

The Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, made the decision saying it is due to continuing punctuality and reliability problems.

Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Filey, said:

"I think it's the right thing; it's an under-performing franchise.

These rail operators need to know that either they do the job right, invest the right kind of money and resources into these routes, or they'll get their franchise taken off them which will cost them a lot of money.

So I support the decision the Transport Secretary took.

There's a lot of these companies, Northern being one and TransPennine Express being the other one, that I would like the Transport Secretary to review the current situation with their franchise; because their performance is appalling.

So it's not a surprise to me about Northern and it shouldn't be a surprise to TransPennine if they get their franchise taken off them too."

I have followed this story and whilst Northern Rail are getting the flack let's not forget the reasons behind it all.

Delays in electrification meaning plans to cascade trains could not go ahead.

Delays in station work which meant new trains couldn't be used.

Delays in delivery of new trains.

And this is only a few of the problems.

Northern Rail are taking all the flack and bad publicity whilst the government who have been the instigators of all the problems with cost cutting are getting away with it.

I think that the MP is jumping the gun here - no announcement has been made that the franchise is definitely to be removed. Unless he knows something we don't?
On the plus side, this week's renewed speculation about having its franchise removed certainly seems to have brought about a much better service from TPE -wonder how long it will last?
