Nearly 100 People On North Yorkshire Organ Transplant Waiting List

Published by Karen Liu at 8:01am 29th December 2019.

Almost 100 people in North Yorkshire are on the waiting list for an organ transplant this New Year.

They are joining more than 6,000 people across the UK, including over 180 children.

The NHS is now urging everyone to share their organ donation decision.

From spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered to have agreed to be on the donation list unless they opt out.

Kerry Morrison's daughter Lynda, both from North Yorkshire, had a heart transplant 25 years ago.

She says it was a really emotional time:

"It was life saving, it was in the middle of the night and it was a Friday night.

It was just terrifying as you can realise, it's your heart taken out.

They're very good up there and I love the hospital really, because of all this."

Mark Smith from North Yorkshire had both kidney and pancreas transplants in 2009.

He says his donor had had a conversation with his parents about opting in:

"My donor, he was only 24 and he was a victim of manslaughter.

He had a conversation with his dad while he was signing his drivers licence application.

So his parents knew what his wishes were, they never talked about it again; but when that happened to Adam, they knew what those wishes were and they were able to respect those decisions and those wishes.

Myself and four other people received organs from Adam."
