Over 500 Call-Outs For Yorkshire Coast Coastguard Teams

Published by Karen Liu at 7:01am 29th December 2019.

The Coastguard teams from Whitby, Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington have attended 507 incidents so far this year.

Out of that number, 205 were from Bridlington.

Matthew Atkinson, Coastal Operations Area Commander at HM Coastguard, said:

"The Bridlington team cover a slightly larger area than some of the other teams.

Anything where we've got technical rescues is two teams and Bridlington are our second to last team going down south on the Holderness coast.

Geographically, Flamborough Head sticks out into the North Sea and gives a larger area of coastline than if it was all straight, so they have a larger area to cover.

We obviously respond to lots of different types of incidents; and some things like in-land flooding, we've seen an increase in that this year.

We are seeing a greater number of vulnerable missing people that we're searching for, and obviously the usual run-of-the-mill missing children, seafront summer holiday type of incidents we've always had."

Matthew has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Karen Liu:
