Whitby Boxing Day Dip Set to be Biggest Ever

The brave and hardy in Whitby will be running into the North Sea on Boxing Day to raise money for charity.

The annual Lions Boxing Day Dip is in its 46th year and could well be the biggest event yet with over 160 people already signed up to take part.

Brian Harrison from the Lions says that number is set to increase.

The intention is that the Boxing Day Dippers get sponsored, with 80% of funds raised donated to the charity of their choice and the remaining 20% helping many local charities which are supported by Whitby District Lions each year.

Brian says that money gets spent on a variety of local schemes.

The event kicks off at 10am on Boxing Day morning, there will be a registration tent open until 10:30 am at the Bandstand opposite the RNLI Museum on Pier Road where dippers can sign up on the day for £20.

Many people take part in the dip in Fancy Dress and there will be prizes for the best dressed. The Fancy dress judging will take place at 10:35 am with prizes going to the best dressed adult male/female, best under 16 male/female and the best team or club. After the prizes have been handed out, all the dippers will then run or jog into the North Sea.

Brian Harrison says the event is not just for those brave enough to venture in to the bracing waves but it's also a great event to watch.
