Festive Road Safety Advice For Whitby Residents

Festive Road Safety Advice For Whitby Residents

Published by Karen Liu at 7:01am 14th December 2019.

Revellers in Whitby are being reminded about road safety over the festive period.

It is for those who plan on having a drink over Christmas and New Year.

The 95Alive partnership will be holding an event today on New Quay Road in Whitby from 10am till 1pm.

It is made up of North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire County Council's Road Safety team.

They will be giving out advice on:

  • not to drink and drive
  • winter driving
  • think about the morning after
  • counting your units
  • and looking after your designated driver

Mandy Pepworth, Road Safety Officer for Scarborough and Whitby at North Yorkshire County Council, said:

"If you're going to have a drink, the simple thing is don't drive.

If you need to drive, don't drink; and think about the morning after, always plan it.

If you're going out and you know you've got to be out in the morning, don't drive.

Get somebody else to do the driving, have a designated driver not just for the evening, but for the next day.

If you're caught drinking and driving and you're convicted of it, you will have a criminal record.

You'll also have a hefty fine and you could probably be banned from driving for at least 12 months.

The other side of it, is that if you're in an accident, and you end up hurting someone or killing someone, that's something you've got to live with for the rest of your life."
