Victorian Christmas for Scarborough

Victorian Christmas for Scarborough

Published by Matthew Pells at 6:01am 10th December 2019.

The Victorian traditions of Christmas are being celebrated at a Christmas Market in Scarborough this week.

Scarborough’s Victorian Christmas market is aiming to bring to life some of the characters of Victorian Christmases from Scrooge to Queen Victoria herself.

The Victorian Christmas Market will be on Westborough from Tuesday 10th December to Sunday 15th. It will be populated by Victorian street entertainers, shopkeepers, and craftspeople, and promises a range of traditional stalls.

The Market has been organised by local businesses, with support from the Yorkshire Coast Business Improvement District (BID).

Penny Beniston, from Scarborough Markets says they want to breath fresh life in to Christmas traditions.

“Our idea of a ‘dream Christmas’ has its origins in Victorian times, so we wanted to bring a little nostalgic magic to Scarborough’s new festival, to make sure that no family has a Scrooge in the run-up to Christmas! The Victorian Christmas Market not only provides great family entertainment as you shop for Christmas, but a chance to buy gifts that you can’t buy anywhere else, as well as treat the family to delicious food, including 19th-century favourites hot pies and cakes!”

Festive shoppers will encounter a range of historic characters at the market like a Victorian Juggler, played by UK Street Performer of the Year, Matt Barnard.  A star of stage and screen, he has performed his circus skills across the world, from Hollywood to the West End, including fire-eating, stilt-walking, and magic tricks.

Living history experts, like husband and wife team Russ and Liz, will also become Victorian shopkeepers, encouraging everyone to try out original Victorian games, or demonstrating how to make traditional candles.

Scarborough’s Victorian Christmas Market will be open daily on Westborough from Tuesday 10 to Sunday 15 December, 9am – 6pm except Thursday when it will be open until 8pm for Late Night Shopping, and Sunday when it closes at 4pm.
