Filey's 'Fishtive' Tree Lights To Be Switched On

Filey's 'Fishtive' Tree Lights To Be Switched On

Published by Karen Liu at 7:01am 7th December 2019.

The lights of Filey's 'Fishtive' tree will be switched on tonight.

The inspiration comes from the town's fishing heritage.

Rex Harrison, a Filey Fisherman, said:

"It's made of 120 crab and lobster pots with a big, giant salmon on the top instead of a fairy.

It's approximately, from bottom to the top, 30-foot high.

On the tree itself, it has 2,100 lights on; so when it gets switched on, it'll look spectacular. "

The event starts at 5pm on the Coble Landing, with the light switch-on at approximately 6pm.

The giant tree will be lit up until the first week of January.

There will also be entertainment for all ages, food, a promise of snow and an appearance of Santa.

The Filey Lions Sleigh will be providing seasonal songs.

Various local groups including The Ramshackle Shantymen, Filey Songbirds and the Filey Show Group will be providing entertainment together with Mick Britton.

Youngsters can sit in Santa’s sleigh that is “pulled” by Bonzo the seal.

The Lifeboat Station will also be open and there will be a Gin Raffle organized by the Filey Ladies Lifeboat Guild.

Julie Hay, Secretary of the Fishtive Tree Committee and a representative of Filey Tourism Association, said:

"We were really doing it in support of Rex and the fishermen who at the time had their licences at risk, and we thought it would draw attention to that and we just wanted to do whatever we could really.

But what's happened, is that it's become so popular that people are visiting.

So we know that people are staying in accommodation and as a result, they're eating in the restaurants and visiting the shops."
