Volunteers Wanted To Support Carers In Scarborough

Published by Karen Liu at 6:01am 6th December 2019.

A Scarborough charity is looking for volunteers to help older people and their carers.

Anyone with spare time is being asked to be a volunteer at Scarborough Support for Carers.

It is looking for people with any spare time to consider being a friend and offer some company to those who live on their own and to help give carers a rest.

Sarah Lally-Marley, a Community Development Worker at Scarborough Support for Carers, said:

"I think people are more aware of loneliness at Christmas.

I mean at the end of the day, people are lonely all year round and actually it's that period after Christmas, those winter months that can drag on.

The short days is very difficult whether you're a carer for somebody or whether you're an older person living on your own; shorter days, long nights, you can get very lonely."

Sarah says supporting carers makes a big difference:

"One lady said to me 'every Monday morning, I go out with my friends, we go swimming and we have a coffee and we just have a laugh. I know that my husband's being looked after, he's got company. I don't have to worry that he's going perhaps wander off or be lonely and miserable.'

She wants to know that while she's having a good time, he's also having a good time and enjoying himself having a chat."

Sarah has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Karen Liu:

No experience is needed to become a volunteer.

Anyone interested is invited to have an informal chat with Scarborough Support for Carers by calling 01723 364808. You can ask any question and there will be no pressure to volunteer.

Alternatively, you can visit their website to find out more:
