Scarborough PC Commended For Support of Former Colleague's Family

Scarborough PC Brad Jackson has won this year’s North Yorkshire Police Public Choice Award, after supporting a former colleague's family.

PC Jackson, Deputy Secretary of the North Yorkshire Police Federation, won the public vote after he provided support to the family and colleagues of PC Mick ‘Aky’ Atkinson, following Mick’s death in October 2018.

The two officers were close friends and Brad had been supporting Mick in the months before his death. Even though Brad was himself grieving the loss, he still provided compassionate support to both Mick’s family and his colleagues. Kellie, Mick’s partner, recognised and said she appreciated PC Jackson's kindness.

Brad told Yorkshire Coast Radio:

“When he did take his own life it was an incredible shock for all of us.

"I took personal comfort from being able to do whatever I could for his family and to support them through the early stages.

"Anyone who is suffering should speak out and should find help.

"There's plenty of people out there that can offer professional help- even if it's just talking to a family member or a close friend.

"Unfortunately it was one thing that Mick didn't talk about and it came as a total shock to everyone who knew him."
