North Yorkshire Schoolchildren Taught Road Safety

Published by Karen Liu at 6:01am 19th November 2019.

Schoolchildren in North Yorkshire are being taught about road safety, as part of a national week of action.

Police and firefighters have been speaking to pupils to mark Road Safety Week.

Students Ebony, Freya, Freddie and Ezra say what they have learnt:

Craig Lyons, Community Safety Officer at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said:

"They're sponges when it comes to information, they're really good at taking it in.

Then they go home and share it with their parents and hopefully it gets that message to adults and grown ups.

When they're listening to their own children, in my experience, they take it in more."

Sergeant Paul Cording from North Yorkshire Police said:

"We're passing the message to them because they're the next generation.

If we're telling them the information now, they can then go and share that information with their parents who might not have had any road safety input since primary school.

If we get the information to young children, they can then challenge inappropriate driving behaviour.

Bringing Lauren in and having that person there you can ask questions to, it's really, really impactive."
