Scarborough Merchant Navy Association Meeting

Scarborough Merchant Navy Association Meeting

Published by Jon Burke at 8:01am 16th November 2019.

People in Scarborough, who've worked at sea, are being invited to join the town's Merchant Navy Association.

It's holding a meeting from 11am on Sunday at the Anglers' Club on Friars Way.

It's looking for more members and the subscription fee is £5 a year.

Anyone who's worked on cargo vessels, tankers, cruise ships, or Trawlers, or in related maritime industries, is welcome.

Vice Chair of the Association, Bob Smith, said:

"We look at planning for trips throughout the year. We have a number of trips planned to different organisations from the Merchant Navy Association. We also hold a meeting in Scarborough every year, for those associations, where we have a gathering and a bit of a party and meet up with some old friends.

When we had the Graham Sea Training, many of the pupils went off to sea, as I did. With the Scarborough Sea Cadet Unit, many people leave and go into service either in the Merchant or the Royal Navy.

We've had this huge tradition in the country and it would be sad to see an organisation of this stature go under, due to lack of membership."
