Whitby Christmas Festival Starts Today

Whitby Christmas Festival Starts Today

Published by Karen Liu at 6:02am 15th November 2019.

This weekend is Whitby's Christmas Festival.

It starts today (Friday 15th November) and runs until Sunday 17th November on the front Marina car park on Langborne Road.

Yorkshire Coast Radio will have a stage there and people will be able to meet Paddy in the Morning, along with DJ Dex and the Love Crew.

Here are some of the highlights:

Friday:-

Local musicians 'the Eskuleles' are performing on the Yorkshire Coast Radio stage, as local school children and their families head down to Pannett Park for the lantern parade at 6pm.

Santa Claus himself will be joining the parade, with a group of young musicians from West Cliff Primary School who have been working alongside Whitby Musicport to develop a 'lively band with a festive groove'.

Local schools across Whitby have been working with the Animated Objects Theatre Company to create a spectacular display of lanterns for this year's Christmas Festival Parade.

Each school has decorated their own large feature lantern, with the theme of these lanterns being science, exploration and discovery. In addition, community workshops in the library have produced a fantastic selection of individual lanterns to brighten up the route.

The procession will start at Pannett Art Gallery at 6pm and weaves its way through the town, including parading over the swing bridge to the East side of town and back again.

The East Side Traders are supporting the event with their Fairy Fringe Fancy Dress event.

Each year the procession has grown in size and this year will also feature young musicians from West Cliff Primary School creating a musical Festive Groove.

Anyone joining the parade is asked to dress up in battery operated Christmas lights, or to bring along their own lantern - but NO Glass Lanterns and NO Naked Flames.

The parade leads visitors along to the Christmas Festival site on Langborne Road, where there will be plenty of entertainment on the Yorkshire Coast Radio stage, a fabulous selection of market stalls and plenty of tasty things to eat and drink.

At 7.45pm, Channel 4 News Chief Correspondent Alex Thomson will be on the stage for the official big switch on with two young designers from Whitby, Ruby & Eliza, who won the Christmas Card design competition.

They will be on stage alongside local 9-piece band 'Back in the Habit' performing soul, funk, blues and disco inspired tunes.

Saturday:-

At 7.45pm, there will be a magnificent fireworks display will commence to end the day with a bang.

There will also be a selection of stalls throughout the weekend at the Christmas Market, with food on offer from around the globe, along with crafts and gifts to suit all tastes.

Sunday:-

There will be an entertainment marquee with live music, free yoga taster session and performances.

At 2.05pm, there will be a Christmas fashion show and a festive singalong at 3pm, which people are being asked to join in to.

The festival is open on the following dates/times:

  • Friday 15th November (5pm- 8pm)
  • Saturday 16th November (10am - 8pm)
  • Sunday 17th November (10am - 4pm)
