Growing Number Of Fraud Calls In North Yorkshire

Published by Karen Liu at 10:38am 11th November 2019.

North Yorkshire Police says it has had a growing number of reports of fraud phone calls.

The two main ones are about HMRC and VISA debit.

It involves an automated voice asking people to 'press one' to speak to an advisor.

The fraudsters scare the victim by telling things like they are going to be arrested, if they do not pay the outstanding amount owed.

Nathan Stuart, who is a Police Community Support Officer in Scarborough, said:

"It can charge you a connection fee, and it can be a quite high amount, it can then charge you a certain amount per minute or per call.

Some victims in Scarborough have had up to £75 costs just by pressing one and whilst talking to you, they will go through a way of trying to obtain all your details.

Even if they're not going to try and take your bank details, they can still take your personal details which they can then use for an identity scam.

If you get a call like this, if anybody tells you to press one, hang up and do not engage with them, do not talk to them.

If you get anybody who talks to you as a human being, not a robot, and they're trying to get information out of you, just hang up and don't give them any information.

If it's anything like there's a problem with your computer, don't tell them you don't have a computer, just hang straight up and do not engage with them."
