Commemorations are to take place along the Yorkshire Coast for Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.

It is to remember the sacrifices made in the two World Wars and later conflicts by the military and civilian servicemen and women.

This Sunday (10th November) is Remembrance Sunday and there are services taking place in Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington.

In Scarborough:-

  • 9.30am - moving service of Remembrance at Queen Street Methodist Hall involving the joining together and blessing of standards and wreaths, a drumhead ceremony and poppies falling during the silence period.
  • 10.35am - a parade to the Lifeboat House, Foreshore Road and the concluding remembrance service and laying of poppies on the sea.
  • Also starting at 10.40am-11am - annual remembrance service with The Royal British Legion at Oliver's Mount War Memorial.

People travelling by vehicle to Oliver's Mount are reminded that the road to Oliver's Mount from the Filey Road side, Jackson's Lane, is currently closed to vehicles.

People are advised to access Oliver's Mount from the Seamer Road side by using Queen Margaret's Road and Mere Lane.  A signed diversion is in place.

In Whitby:-

  • 10.30am - remembrance service at Dockend
  • 2.30pm - remembrance service at St. Mary's Church

In Bridlington:-

Residents are being reminded about the changes to the parade route.

They are being asked to be at Hilderthorpe Road Coach Park by 10.05am at the latest, instead of Station Approach, which is closed because of roadworks.

The parade will start at 10.35am.

It will head down Springfield, Quay Road and to the War Memorial Garden at Wellington Road, where a Remembrance Service will take place at 11am.

The parade then resumes, going down Prospect Street, Bridge Street and disbands on King Street.

On Monday (11th November), it is Armistice Day and there are also services happening in Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington.

In Bridlington:-

  • 10.45am - people are being asked to gather at the War Memorial Garden and then a two minute silence will be observed at 11am. The service will be led by Reverend Matthew Pollward from the Priory.

In Scarborough:-

  • 10.45am - there will be a small gathering at Alma Square for a short service by Vicar David Dixon from St. Martin-on-the-Hill. There will be a few prayers and appearance from the Mayor of Scarborough Borough and the Deputy Lord Lieutenant of North Yorkshire.

In Whitby:-

  • 10.50am - Armistice Day Service at Dockend.

On Sunday and again on Monday, Yorkshire Coast Radio will be running a special programme to mark Remembrance Sunday and on Monday, Armistice Day.

The programme includes the two minute silence for listeners.
