Bridlington Meeting for Those Concerned About BID

Bridlington Meeting for Those Concerned About BID

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 1:32pm 8th November 2019. (Updated at 1:33pm 8th November 2019)

A meeting takes place in Bridlington tonight, for those who have concerns about the Yorkshire Coast Business Improvement District Scheme.

It's after Scarborough council agreed to an independent investigation into the ballot, which compels businesses with a rateable value of more than £12,000 to contribute to a pot for tourism improvements.

It's being held at the Revelstoke Hotel on Flamborough Road at 6.30pm.

Business owner John Hesp, who's against the idea, said:

"57 per cent of those recently surveyed, said they never received any ballots or information on the subject. Now I think this is the problem, because there are so many businesses, especially in bridlington that I'm talking to, have said the first they heard of this was when they received the invoice from the local authority.

My position on the whole thing is the intent on the local authority and the BID company, was to say this should be a business-led thing and I genuinely believe, having looked into it in more detail, that whilst they say that, the BID process and the ballot has been immensely flawed in several areas."
