Whitby Town Council Rejects £6,000 From Yorkshire Coast BID

Published by Karen Liu at 5:50pm 6th November 2019. (Updated at 5:53pm 6th November 2019)

Whitby Town Council has voted to not accept £6,000 from the Yorkshire Coast Business Improvement District.

It would have been used to fund the town's Christmas festival next week.

The motion was put forward at a meeting last night, which was passed by a majority.

Whitby Town Councillor Sandra Turner, who supported the motion, said:

"There's a wealth of feeling against the BID at the moment, particularly from Whitby businesses, but having said that it's throughout the whole BID area.

And it was felt that it was wrong for the Town Council to accept funding from the BID when our businesses are suffering from it.

Having spoken to Councillors that are involved, the Christmas festival will go ahead.

It will not be as easy as it was, and I have to say, I didn't make this decision lightly.

We don't want to jeopardise any event, but equally, we're a Town Council and we are there to support our local businesses and our local community."

Councillor Turner has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Karen Liu:

On Monday, Scarborough Borough Council agreed to launch an independent investigation into the vote that led to the Yorkshire Coast BID.

Councillors agreed to the motion following claims that some eligible businesses were excluded from the initial vote.

The investigation will only look into the authority's own involvement in the ballot.

It is because the council does not have the power to investigate third parties and it is now urging the BID company to voluntarily take part in the process.

Following this motion, a meeting has been organised in Bridlington for businesses opposed to the Yorkshire Coast Business Improvement District.

It is at 6.30pm at the Revelstoke Hotel on Flamborough Road.

my goodness a council with standards. Bet Scarborough will grab it with both hands, save them paying out for lights.
