Volunteers Needed To Help Blind People In Bridlington

Published by Yorkshire Coast Radio News at 8:36am 3rd November 2019.

Could you be a 'My Guide' volunteer in Bridlington or the East Riding?

My Guide is a service for those with sight loss who aren't suitable for a guide dog.

It involves them being replaced by humans instead, who can take the service users out and about.

My Guide volunteer Alan Precious said:

"The degree of friendship and companionship is different to having a dog and the type of activities people can get involved in is different by having a my guide volunteer.

"It's like an extension of guide dogs [and] it's quite a new thing- it's only been running since 2012.

"Some people have become quite housebound, their confidence is very low, so by having a trained volunteer who can guide them [and] encourage them to go out it can make a great difference to their lives.

"From the volunteer side, it's really nice, some people might be feeling lonely themselves they get involved in volunteering, they go to a cafe to the museum for a walk in the countryside..."

You can find out more via https://www.guidedogs.org.uk or call 0345 143 0229 for details on volunteering with My Guide.
