£2 Million Bid for Scarborough's Old Town

£2 Million Bid for Scarborough's Old Town

A bid is being put together for an investment of up to £2 million pounds for Scarborough's Old Town.

It'll come from the government's Historic High Street Fund and be used for improvements around Newborough and Eastborough.

The application will be submitted in December, with a decision expected in January.

Castle Ward councillor, Janet Jefferson, said:

"Various representatives from organisations did a tour round the area of Newborough and Eastborough and the little annexes and ginnells off it.

We did an appraisal of this area and selected things that would benefit from a grant, not least the restoration of buildings like the Pentecostal Church and shop fronts.

At the bottom end of the town, we could have an arch, saying 'Welcome to the Old Town', we could do things in areas in and around the market, promote things on a night, improve seating areas for residents and visitors.

It's endless really, but it has to have the basis of being historical, in line with what a Conservation Area would accommodate."
