Scarborough's 'Story' To Be Brought To Life

Scarborough's 'Story' To Be Brought To Life

Published by Karen Liu at 11:54am 30th October 2019.

Scarborough is one of two towns across England and Wales set to receive support from the Carnegie UK Trust to plan, articulate and present the story of all that it offers to both residents and visitors alike.

Representatives from the town will receive training from storytelling experts, sounddelivery, to help create the story of their town.

The story will then be brought to life at an event organised by Coast and Vale Community Action in Scarborough to encourage support and investment in the town from policymakers, practitioners, and politicians.

The Carnegie UK Trust seeks to play a leading role in supporting the development of towns' policy and innovative practice in towns.

The storytelling Talk of the Town pilot comes on the back of the Trust's international research, which showcased how international towns had transformed their fortunes, with their success, in-part, being down to each having developed a narrative - along with a sense of purpose and understanding of their history - about what their town was 'known for' to support the selling of their town to visitors.

Treorchy has also been chosen to receive support from the Talk of the Town activity following the submission of a video on the future vision for the town. 29 towns applied to take part.

Here is Scarborough's video submission:

Sarah Davidson, Chief Executive of the Carnegie UK Trust, said:

"Storytelling is becoming an increasingly important tool in public policy.

Facts and figures are important but we can only really get to know our places by understanding how they define, explain and present themselves to the world.

We look forward to supporting towns to look forward, not just back, and develop what they have to offer residents and visitors, and bring this to the surface - and into the spotlight".

Mel Bonney-Kane Chief Executive Officer, Coast and Vale Community Action, Scarborough added:

"We are thrilled to be part of Talk of the Town.  Scarborough is full of people who want to make a positive difference to the place they live in and we help them to do just that.

Linking up with the Carnegie UK Trust is a big boost to our work to support communities to thrive".

Jude Habib, Founder and Director of sounddelivery, added:

"We need to hear the stories from our towns and I'm looking forward to working with the local community to champion their experiences".
