Government to Respond to Whitby Potash Petition

Government to Respond to Whitby Potash Petition

Published by Karen Liu at 6:01am 24th October 2019. (Updated at 7:21am 24th October 2019)

The Government is set to respond to a petition about the potash mine near Whitby.

It is because it has hit just over 11,000 signatures, with over 1,000 of those coming from people in Scarborough and Whitby.

The petition is asking the HM Treasury to support the project by giving Sirius Minerals, the mine's owners, a full loan guarantee.

The Government has to respond to all petitions that get more than 10,000 signatures.

If it reaches 100,000 signatures, then the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.

Anyone who wants to sign it can do so here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/269824

so 11,000 sign a petition and only 1,000 are from this area!! So 10,000 people who are not actually living in this area are in favour of the government giving taxpayers money to back a private firm!!! Wonder how many of those people who signed actually pay taxes? I for one do not think the government should guarantee this firm. If they are so certain to make money why are private investors not backing them?

I think your a short sighted fool. If this countries goverment had any business acumen it would absolutely be investing and supporting British industry, rather than having an endless stream of coffee shops and restaurants we could actually have a robust thriving economy built on highly specialised and world leading tech. Meaning more job, job security for thousands, the end to zero hour contracts, increased GDP and thr opportunity to actually be a country that is taken seriously abroad, rather than just being the joke we are. But hey, if you would rather the goverment not actually build a strong thriving economy built on solid foundation because the thought of more successfull people than you making some money for their family makes you bitter then go for it. Let's all suffer together in a poor weak country because it upsets your self esteem.

definitely short sighted, never considered myself a fool and i can assure you i am neither bitter or lack self esteem. Of course you have no idea of whether i have been successful in my life or not as you do not know me. My comments still stand and i do not resort to personal abuse to make them.
So do you think the government should back every business that asks them to? I not only know people who have invested in Sirius but also some who work for them and whilst i would not wish them to lose their jobs or money why should that influence my opinion that the government should not be gambling on this firm. Sort out the trains, the post office and the power companies first.
