Channel 4 News Chief Correspondent Alex Thomson will be switching on the Christmas Lights in Whitby this year.

Alex has family connections with the town and says he’s “Looking forward to it very much. A great honour”.

Alex will be assisted at the switch on by Town Mayor, Town Crier & the two winners of the Design a Christmas Card Competition. So if he was called away we have plenty of back up.

Alex is the longest-serving on-screen journalist on Channel 4 News since the channel began. In more than 25 years he's covered over 20 wars; led major investigations and continues to front the programme from around the world.

Whitby Town Mayor, Councillor Rebecca Pearson said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Alex to Whitby Christmas Festival. It is fantastic that he has agreed to come along and switch on our Christmas lights and we hope he thoroughly enjoys being part of our event.”

The Christmas festival will take place across the weekend of 15th ,16th and 17th November. Organisers say there will be entertainment in a Festival Marquee, including choirs and bands, drama and dance, and a Fashion Show, organised by Sainsbury’s.

On the Friday evening, the community lantern parade be processing through the town to the Christmas Market and the Yorkshire Coast Radio stage will be entertaining the crowds at the Festival site.

The stage will host a programme of music and entertainment with a series of guests appearing throughout the evening.
