Scarborough Lifeboat Crew To Relay Run To Blackpool

Scarborough Lifeboat Crew To Relay Run To Blackpool

Published by Karen Liu at 6:01am 18th October 2019.

12 Scarborough RNLI crew members are set to run from their lifeboat station to Blackpool's today.

It is to raise funds for the charity in both locations, but mainly for Scarborough.

John Senior, a Deputy Launch Authority at the town's RNLI, said:

"It is going to be a rolling relay, obviously we can't run 140 miles all the way.

The team is spread age group from about mid 20s through to 74, so obviously there's a fairly quite skillset.

The old stragglers like us are going to be doing around one hour or one hour and a half of running.

Some of the really keen runners, who are marathon runners, are maybe doing up to two and half hours during the 30 hour run."

They are setting off from 7am today (Friday 18th October).

It is not only to raise money for the RNLI, but also to raise awareness of the Andrew McGeown Legacy Fund.

John added:

"We're coming up to five years since Andrew McGeown died in Feburary very tragically in the South Bay.

We now have three members of his family involved in Scarborough Lifeboat Station and Peter McGeown, his brother, is leading off on this.

So it's very much building on the work that the McGeown family are doing with the Swim Trust and raising that profile, because it's important work and it is putting out the message of sea safety."
