Boost In Affordable Homes In Scarborough Borough

New homes built in the borough could be discounted by up to 45% to help people get on to the property ladder.

Scarborough Council’s cabinet yesterday approved an update to its planning policy to include the Discount for Sale scheme.

Under the Government scheme, developers will have the choice of whether to provide traditional rented affordable homes or the discounted homes, which are sold at a price set by the council.

The discounts for homes in Scarborough, Whitby and Filey will range from between 40% to 45% based on factors such as the average house price and income in each area.

Those eligible for the scheme will likely have to live or work in the borough and would not be able to use the property as a second home or be sub-let without permission from the borough council.

Buyers would also have to declare their income and show they are unable to purchase a property on the open market.

The council is in the process of finalising the eligibility criteria.

The cabinet unanimously approved the change to the council’s supplementary planning document to include the Discount for Sale Scheme, dismissing calls from the Home Builders Federation for an independent inspector to assess the scheme in the process.
