Demolitions for Damaged Chalets in Scarborough

Demolitions for Damaged Chalets in Scarborough

Published by Jon Burke at 4:56pm 15th October 2019.

Historic beach chalets in Scarborough’s South Bay, damaged by the collapse of an adjacent retaining wall in March 2018, are set to be demolished to make way for the development of replacement chalets.

At a meeting today, Scarborough Borough Council’s Cabinet agreed to the demolition of the chalets in front of the Clock Café and robust reinstatement of the retaining wall. A budget of £473,000 has been allocated for the project, which when complete, will create a development platform for the subsequent reinstatement of the chalets.

Cabinet also authorised officers to explore the options and business case for the future replacement of the chalets. Given the Grade II listed status of the chalets, replacement would need to be on a like for like basis, although improvements to the inside of the chalets would be permitted.

The demolition of the chalets will take place next month. As the design for the wall reinstatement scheme has not yet started, there will be a gap between the end of the chalet demolition and the start of the reconstruction of the retaining wall. The work is due to be completed by July next year. The replacement of the chalets will follow later after the completion of the options appraisal and business case by officers, which will be subject to a further report to Cabinet.

Cllr Steve Siddons, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council, Cllr Steve Siddons, said:

“The original solution was to demolish the chalets and build a simple retaining structure. That would not have left space to allow the 11 chalets to be reconstructed. I am pleased the new proposal leaves us with the opportunity to reinstate the chalets as they are a key part of the area’s heritage.”

Sounds just like the Futurist all over again.
We will knock down the chalets and build a wall which will cost £473 thousand and be done by July next year.

Then we will sit and chat about the building of the chalets and waffle about it before giving away more money..

Another SBC farce in the making
