Parachute Flares Light Up Scarborough South Bay

Parachute Flares Light Up Scarborough South Bay

Published by Matthew Pells at 10:38am 26th September 2019.

Strange lights over Scarborough's South Bay last night weren't the start of an alien invasion but the local RNLI training with powerful flares.

The white parachute flares created an eerie spectacle over the south bay on Tuesday evening. They were set off during a training exercise by Scarborough RNLI. They are used for lighting up search areas at night and for marking a position for collision avoidance.

Erik Woolcott caught the flares lighting up the South Bay sea from Scarborough's Shannon Class lifeboat.
