Open Day And Boat Blessing At Whitby RNLI

Open Day And Boat Blessing At Whitby RNLI

Published by Karen Liu at 7:00am 22nd September 2019.

Whitby RNLI is holding an open day today.

It is from 10am to 4pm and there is a chance for people to meet the crew and see the lifeboats.

There will also be stalls and refreshments.

The Lifeboat Station's Mechanic, Richard Dowson, said:

"We hold an open day usually once a year at the station and it's separate to our flag weekend, which usually is about fundraising.

The station open day is for people to come into the station, have a look round and see the work we do, rather than being a big sort of fundraising thing really."

There is also going to be a ceremony at 2.30pm.

Richard added:

"The service is called 'The Blessing of the Boats' and it's quite a traditional thing.

There'll be a service held by the Right Reverend Paul Ferguson, who's the Bishop of Whitby, and he blesses all the boats, not just the lifeboat.

We hold it here at the station because we're in quite a prominent position within the harbour."
