Scarborough's Summer Cricket Festival Starts

Published by Jon Burke at 7:04am 30th June 2019.

Today is the start of Scarborough's 133rd Summer Festival of Cricket.

North Marine Road is the venue for Yorkshire's four-day County Championship match against Surrey.

It's the first of two county matches which will be played at the ground this season.

Vice-President of Scarborough Cricket Club, Bill Mustoe, said:

"30 to 40,000 people will come to the festival, we have the largest crowds in the country for Championship cricket and that's been true for a couple of decades or more.

People arrive by car, they stay in hotels, they eat in restaurants - we think it's worth over £$ million to the local economy".

Bill's been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Jon Burke..

"People arrive by cars" It is a pity that we do not have a reliable train service so that people could feel more confident about using that form of transport instead. But given what happened in the cricket last year (for example two early evening TPE trains in a row cancelled on one occasion )and yesterday after Armed Forces Day when a train was cancelled at the very time when crowds were hoping to get back to York and Leeds etc. it is not surprising that they choose to use the car instead.
