Yorkshire Puffin Festival In Flamborough

Yorkshire Puffin Festival In Flamborough

Published by Karen Liu at 6:02am 15th June 2019.

The Yorkshire Puffin Festival is in Flamborough this weekend.

Yorkshire Wildlife Trust is hosting the festival for the second time.

It aims to educate and inspire the people of Yorkshire about the local puffin colony, which comes to nest on Flamborough Cliffs each year.

All through Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th, the Trust will be hosting activities designed to give you the best chance of spotting a puffin, whilst also learning a bit more about these cheeky clowns of the sea.

This year the festival falls on the 'Big Wild Weekend', an integral part of Yorkshire Wildlife Trust's 30 Days Wild campaign which encourages participants to do something wild every day in June to better connect with wildlife and the natural world.

David Craven, East Regional Manager for Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, said:

"We're so excited to be bringing the Puffin Festival back for a second year! June is the best time to see puffins as that's when the babies, or 'pufflings', hatch out so the parents are busy going back and forth collecting fish feed them.

The Puffin Festival is great fun, but it is also about raising awareness. Like many marine animals, puffins are at risk from climate change, pollution and over-fishing."

The festival is a great opportunity to introduce more people to the fascinating birds and encourage action to help save them.

The puffins at Flamborough Cliffs are Yorkshire born and bred after all, so there is a responsibility to keep them safe.

Children from Bempton and Flamborough Primary Schools officially launched the festival last month.

Aboard an East Yorkshire Motor Services open-topped bus they journeyed to the Living Seas Centre at South Landing to learn about puffins and other marine wildlife, before heading to North Landing to create some puffin-inspired art on the beach.

Visitors to Flamborough Cliffs on the Puffin Festival weekend can expect a range of activities, including cliff-top guided walks, team beach cleans and a wildlife photography workshop.
