There is a cycle awareness event in Whitby today.

It is at the Leisure Centre from 10am until 2pm and everyone is welcome to bring their bicycles.

It has been organised by North Yorkshire County Council, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and North Yorkshire Police.

They will be in the car park offering:

  • Property marking
  • Bike health check
  • Cycle helmet check
  • Advice on cycling on the road

It is all for free and there will be a little competition too with a chance to win a prize.

They want to encourage people to not use their cars for short journeys.

Mandy Pepworth, a Road Safety Officer for Scarborough and Whitby, said:

"The benefits from cycling is just amazing; it's good for your health, it's good for the community, reduces your carbon footprint and it gets you fitter."
