No Blue Flag For Scarborough Due To 'Tougher Standards' Says MP

No Blue Flag For Scarborough Due To 'Tougher Standards' Says MP

Published by Karen Liu at 6:02am 22nd May 2019.

Scarborough's MP reckons the town hasn't gained a Blue Flag due to tougher standards.

We told you last week that Whitby retained its award and it is the only one in Yorkshire to get the accolade, just like last year.

It is given to beaches for being clean, safe and meeting high environmental standards.

Scarborough's South Bay didn't get a Blue Flag or a Seaside award this year.

Robert Goodwill said:

"The standards have tightened up which means it's harder to pass.

But I would be critical of that, as it's not so many years ago when all the Scarborough sewage was pumped out into the sea, in a long sea outfall and we had problems with all sorts of things that were in the sewage washing up on the beach.

We have a much cleaner situation than ever before, all the sewage in Scarborough is treated properly.

I'm optimistic that we can continue to improve the bathing water quality.

And although every year when the Blue Flag awards are announced, and we get varying reports, we do not seem to have a major problem with people being made ill by being on the beach or being in the sea in Scarborough.

So whilst it is a matter of some concern, we've not had any really major health problems associated with this."

Robert Goodwill has been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Karen Liu:

So all the sewage has been cleaned up - then what exactly is the problem Mr Goodwill? Please do not say dogs and seagulls!! Standards may have gone up but if Whitby and other places can get a blue flag why not here? The same standards must apply to them.

Just what planet has Goodwill come from.
Another load of excuses as to why Scarborough has failed yet again.

Whitby has been awarded the flag, so they have met the standards.

A match made in heaven is Goodwill and sewage.
