Parcel Postboxes Introduced on Yorkshire Coast

Royal Mail

Published by May Norman at 12:53pm 20th May 2019.

Parcel postboxes are being launched on the Yorkshire Coast.

This is where people can send pre-paid parcels or packages in the same way they currently post letters.

Royal Mail is behind the move.

1,400 parcel postboxes are being introduced across the country - including Scarborough and Bridlington.

This marks the first major repurposing of the postbox in the last 160 years.

The first phase of the launch will see the Royal Mail convert pre-existing meter boxes (1,400 in total), which include a wider aperture and secure design for mailing larger items.

The scheme follows a successful trial of the boxes in 2018.

The parcel postboxes will also allow customers to mail back some barcoded online shopping returns.

This is the first time parcel postboxes have been widely introduced in the UK, and the launch represents the first major change of use for the postbox in its last 160 years of existence.
