Air Display Line-Up For Scarborough's Armed Forces Day

Published by Karen Liu at 1:10pm 9th April 2019.

The air display line-up has announced for this year's Armed Forces Day event in Scarborough.

The skies above Scarborough’s South Bay will be graced by the sight and sound of a variety of aircraft representing generations old and new, both from the civil and Military world, featuring the RAF’s Typhoon, Spitfire and Tucano displays, Calidus Autogyro and a demonstration from HM Coastguard.

Kicking off the confirmation list is Yorkshire’s own Tucano Display Team, from No 72 Squadron, based at RAF Linton on Ouse. Flown by Flight Lieutenant Liam Matthews, the Tucano is the RAF’s current basic trainer, used for training fast jet pilots, before moving onto the Hawk.

This sadly will also be the Tucano’s Swansong display at Scarborough, this will be its only public display in Yorkshire, a county that has been its home for over 15 years.

The Tucano will be phased out of service in 2020 following a career of over 3 decades in RAF service, so a real chance to be part of the aircraft’s history.

Bringing the classic and unforgettable sound of the mighty Merlin engine will be one of the RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfires, from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

The BBMF are regular visitors to Scarborough and take us back in history, representing Yorkshire’s efforts during WW2, especially in this 75th Anniversary year of D-Day.

Joining the RAF Display’s will be Peter Davies in the Calidus Autogyro, half helicopter and half aeroplane, this unusual aircraft certainly doesn’t disappoint in Peter’s unique display.

Once again it is hoped that the huge S-92 Helicopter from HM Coastguard will be on display working with Scarborough’s own RNLI teams.

Last but not least, bringing the noise to Scarborough this year will be Flight Lieutenant Jim Peterson and the formidable Eurofighter Typhoon FGR4, of 29 Squadron and also based at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire.

This will be Jim’s second season displaying the Typhoon, in between his duties as an instructor, where he trains the next generation of RAF Pilots on this awesome aircraft.
