Scarborough's Alpamare To Apply For Alcohol Licence

Scarborough's Alpamare To Apply For Alcohol Licence

Published by Local Democracy Reporter Carl Gavaghan at 1:39pm 21st March 2019.

Scarborough’s Alpamare waterpark has applied for a new premises licence to allow it to sell alcohol after the previous one lapsed when its operator got into financial trouble.

The operator of the £14million Burniston Road attraction, Alpamare UK, was issued with a winding-up petition in January over unpaid debts to British Gas.

The company reached a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) to meet its debt obligations on January 21 to allow it to continue to operate.

Filings show that it owed more than £700,000 to British Gas, £2.3 million to Benchmark Leisure, its landlord, £114,000 to HMRC and £107,000 to Scarborough Borough Council, which provided a £9m loan for the attraction to be built.

Since January, Alpamare has confirmed that the attraction will no longer be open all year round and last week opened a new Wellness spa on the site.

One consequence of the CVA was that it invalidated the company’s premises licence with Scarborough Council, which allowed it to hold certain events and to sell alcohol.

Since then the company has used a number of Temporary Event Notices (TENs) to allow it to operate as normal.

It has also applied for a new premises licence but with Benchmark Leisure replacing Alpamare UK as the applicant.

The times would remain the same as previously granted.

The application states:

“Licensed activities to take place between 8am and 10pm Monday to Sunday save for on six occasions per year when licensable activities are permitted to take place between 8am and 2am the following morning provided that these events are notified to the licencing authority and to North Yorkshire Police in advance.”

The application is now out to consultation until April 1.
