Funding Secured For New Stand At Scarborough's Flamingo Land Stadium

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 3:09pm 12th February 2019. (Updated at 4:44pm 12th February 2019)

Funding's been secured for a new stand at Scarborough Athletic's Flamingo Land Stadium.

The Football Stadia Improvement Fund granted the £150,000 for it, which will increase the overall capacity of the ground to 2,800.

The stand will be covered and will have additional spaces for disabled spectators. That money will be added to the £100,000 generated by Scarborough Borough Council in 2017 through the awarding of the naming rights of the Flamingo Land Stadium.

The remaining funds required for the projected £290,000 project will be provided by Scarborough Athletic FC, its Supporters Club and sponsors.

The new stand will be constructed on the Oliver's Mount side of the ground and will have tiered standing as well as 336 seats.

Work is expected to start on the improvements in the coming months, which will initially involve alterations to the floodlights and pitch side fence. The construction of the new stand will begin after the end of the 2018/19 football season to minimise disruption.

Trevor Bull, Chairman of Scarborough Athletic FC said:

“I am absolutely over the moon that the funding bid has been successful. It enables us to get started on the much needed stadium improvements, which, when complete, will provide our loyal supporters with a greatly improved match day experience.

We particularly welcome the ability to be able to expand our provision for disabled fans and we know the new facilities will be well used.

The increased capacity that the changes will bring will not only allow us to maintain our current level of support but also increase it in the future.

The project has been 18 months in the planning and development and I would like to thank everyone who has worked so hard to get us to this stage.”

Cllr Martin Smith, Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet Member for Leisure added:

“We are delighted that work can now take place to enhance what is already a fantastic community facility.

We are particularly pleased with the football club’s commitment to encouraging inclusivity in football by providing better facilities for families and disabled spectators.

The drive and determination of everyone involved in the project to date, together with the ongoing generous support of Flamingo Land Ltd, has been outstanding. It is a wonderful example of what can be achieved though partnership working.”
