Scarborough MP Reacts to Flamingo Land Plans

Scarborough MP Reacts to Flamingo Land Plans

We've been looking at the plans for the new Flamingo Land Coast attraction, proposed for the site of the former Futurist Theatre in Scarborough.

A formal planning application is yet to be submitted and Flamingo Land says it will consult with the public before that happens.

But the borough council has been sent a Screening Opinion request by AAH planning consultants, which outline the plans.

They include:

  • 4D interactive dark ride
  • Thrill rides, including a 60-metre high Shot Tower, rollercoaster and zip wire
  • live actors, describing the story of Scarborough and the previous buildings on the site
  • family activities, such as a mini-coaster, rope courses and crazy golf
  • family entertainment area
  • education centre
  • restaurant, cafe, brewery and bar
  • Winter Garden

The floor plans are below:

It's projected it would bring between 445,000 and 535,000 visitors per year.

Regarding the impact on nearby properties and their residents, the report says:

"Operational phase noise impacts may arise from the operation of the new Cliffhanger and roller-coaster attractions during the day. Any assessment should include expected noise from patrons visiting the attractions such as screaming. During the night time period refrigerations plant will be operational."

Scarborough MP, Robert Goodwill, has been reacting to the artist's impressions of the attraction.

Images released earlier this week got a mixed reaction from the public, with some saying it doesn't fit in with the surroundings.

Robert's been speaking to Yorkshire Coast Radio's Jon Burke.

Would Mr Goodwill be so bullish if he had to look at this (or hear the noise) every day?
He says it is good to see that Flamingo Land is putting forward proposals. However, this is not a planning application and even if permission is eventually granted Flamingo Land (just like any other applicant) is under no obligation to actually do anything.
