Climate Activists To Hold Demonstration In Scarborough

Scarborough Town Hall

Published by Karen Liu at 10:22am 6th January 2019. (Updated at 1:24pm 6th January 2019)

Extinction Rebellion Scarborough, a group of climate activists, will be holding a demonstration outside the Town Hall.

We told you earlier this week that the authority’s two Green Party councillors, Cllr Mark Vesey and Cllr Dilys Cluer, will bring a motion at the full council meeting tomorrow (Monday 7th January) asking their fellow members to help the borough achieve carbon neutrality.

The group is calling on the public to sacrifice half an hour of their lunch break to join them on the steps of the Town Hall at 1.30pm tomorrow, or email their councillors to urge them to back this motion.

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion Scarborough said:

“We, and the Greens, believe that human-caused climate change is a real and direct threat to the existence of life on earth and if current trends continue, we risk ‘runaway climate change’ – not in the distant future, but in our lifetimes.

This is not us being ‘alarmist’, and we are far from alone in sounding this warning.

At the recent global climate summit, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said failure to take action to limit global warming was both ‘immoral and suicidal’.

Leading climate scientists believe we have  just 12 years left to dramatically change course or condemn the planet to a future of much more intense and frequent storms, heatwaves, floods, crop failures and species extinctions.

Such warnings should not paralyse us – but we cannot act alone. Therefore we call on all concerned citizens to demand our leaders take the necessary action and work with us, not against us.”
