Scarborough Council Ditches Winter Parking Charge

Scarborough council's cabinet has agreed to scrap charging for winter parking in the borough.

Previously, there was no charge to council car parks in the borough between November and March.

But the authority looked to introduce a £1 charge for 24 hours during that time, which was passed by cabinet last month.

The proposal was called in by a number of councillors and went to the Overview and Scrutiny Board meeting yesterday (Monday 12 November), who recommended the cabinet reconsider the decision to charge for parking over the winter.

Today (Tuesday 13 November), the cabinet agreed to ditch the winter parking scheme for now, but will put it out to consultation next year.

Another part of the scheme which sees a residents' discount in the winter for car parks that do charge, will still go ahead - at a cost to the council of £84,000.

The council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Martin Smith, said:

"I don't think it was a bad idea. The idea behind it was always to get people here. By doing what we've done, it gives us the opportunity to research it further and come up with solutions that suit all."
