Remembrance Day Events On The Yorkshire Coast

It is Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, this Sunday (11th November 2018).

It marks the day World War One ended, at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month, in 1918 - this Sunday marks 100 years since the end of the conflict.

A two-minute silence is held at 11am to remember the people who have died in wars.

Here is a list of Remembrance Day events taking place on the Yorkshire coast:


  • Event: Yorkshire Coast Remembers
      • Date/Time: Saturday 10th November - 5pm to 10pm
      • Location: Grand Hotel on St Nicholas Cliff, Scarborough and Scarborough Spa.
      • Information: A special evening of remembrance in Scarborough, which will start with a community lantern parade followed by a grand 'Royal Albert Hall' style centenary service in the Grand Hall at Scarborough Spa (this is a free, ticketed only event. Tickets are available from Scarborough Spa box office).
        As part of the parade, 100 illuminated poppy lanterns will be carried from the Grand Hotel on St Nicholas Cliff at 5pm to Scarborough Spa in time for the start of the service at 6pm. Evening centenary service follows.
  • Event: Service and parade
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 9.30am
      • Location: Queen Street Methodist Hall, Queen Street, Scarborough, YO11 1HQ 
      • Information: Moving service of remembrance involving the joining together and blessing of standards and wreaths, a drumhead ceremony and poppies falling during the silence period. Followed at 10.35am by a parade to the Lifeboat House, Foreshore Road and the laying of wreaths on the sea
  • Event: Remembrance Day Service - Scarborough Unitarians
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 10.30am to 11.30am
      • Location: Scarborough Unitarian Church, Victoria Parade, YO11 1TY
      • Information: The Yorkshire Unitarian Union services will be looking back at 100 years since the end of World War 1
  • Event: Annual Royal British Legion remembrance service
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 11am
      • Location: Oliver's Mount war memorial, Scarborough, YO11 2TZ
      • Information: It's the annual Royal British Legion remembrance service at Oliver's Mount war memorial.
      • Event: Armistice Centenary Wood - Ceremonial Tree Planting
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November 11.30am-12pm
      • Location: Burniston Road, Scarborough. Pathway leading to Yorkshire Water Pump Building
      • Planting of trees
  • Event: Scarborough run organised for Armistice Centenary
      • Date/Time: Monday 12th November - 5.45pm
      • Location: Saint Cecilia's Day Care Centre, 1 Eastway, Eastfield, YO11 3LS
      • Information: Scarborough care provider Saint Cecilia's has teamed up with Scarborough Athletic Club's Walk to Run Group to host a very special three-mile run to mark this year's Armistice Centenary.
        The run will be followed by chilli, rice and cake! Entry is £5 with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion. Everyone is welcome.


  • Event: Service followed by parade
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 9.30am 
      • Location: St. Oswald's Church, Church Hill, YO14 9ET
      • Information: Service at St. Oswald's Church followed by parade to the Memorial Garden on Murray Street for remembrance, the laying of wreaths and two minutes silence at 11am.
  • Event: WW1 Centenary Torchlight Parade
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 5.15pm to 6pm
      • Location: Filey bus station
      • Information: As well as the annual remembrance service at 11am, there will be a torchlight parade from Filey Bus Station to the Memorial Garden on Murray Street for a short remembrance event. People are requested to arrive at the Bus Station by 5.15pm. Battery powered light batons will be handed out free of charge to the first 200 people, who will have the opportunity to make a donation to The Royal British Legion.


  • Event: Remembrance Day Commemorations
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 6am and 11am.
      • Location: Bridlington War Memorial, 14 Wellington Road, Bridlington, YO15 2BH
      • Information: There will be several events in conjunction with the normal 11am service. 6am is a "The Battle's O'er" - a lement performed by a Lone Piper and 11am is the Remembrance Service
  • Event: Remembrance Day Commemorations
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 6pm to 7.05pm
      • Location: Bridlington Priory Church, The Rectory Church Green, Bridlington YO16 7JX
      • Information: At 6pm there will be a Commemoration to remember the WW1 Fallen and then at 7pm there will be Beacons of Light, WW1 Beacon lit by the Mayor and the Mayor's Cadet at the West door of the Bridlington Priory. 7.05pm is the ringing out for peace - the bells will ring at the Bridlington Priory Church to signify the end of the day's commemorations.


  • Event: Armistice Commemoration
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 10.15am
      • Location: War Memorial, Dock End, YO21 1DH
      • Information: There will be an armistice commemoration at the War Memorial, Dock End.
  • Event: Remembrance service
      • Date/Time: Sunday 11th November - 2.30pm
      • Location: St. Mary's Church, Abbey Plain, YO22 4JR
      • Information: There is a remembrance service at St. Mary's Church.
