Tree of Remembrance Planted in Scarborough

A tree of remembrance to mark the end of the World War One has been planted in the gardens of Scarborough Town Hall this week.

The 'Yorkshire Coast Remembers' steering group, which has worked on a number of initiatives to commemorate the centenary of the WW1 armistice, is inviting people to add their own messages of remembrance and dedications to loved ones who served their country to the tree.

Special poppy cards to write messages on, along with plastic sleeves to keep the completed cards dry and ribbon to tie the cards to the tree, are available free of charge from the Customer First centre next door to the Town Hall on St Nicholas Street during week day office hours.

The cards will be available from Thursday 1 November to Wednesday 21 November. While the emphasis is on remembering WW1, the tree of remembrance welcomes messages relating to anyone who served in any conflict or who were a civilian victim of war at home or overseas.

Cllr Tom Fox, who has led the Yorkshire Coast Remembers Steering Group, said:

“This is a lovely opportunity for people to capture their thoughts and memories of loved ones caught up in conflict in a visual way and help us to create a poignant tribute to commemorate the centenary of the armistice. We also welcome those passing by the gardens to read the messages people have added and reflect on what this special anniversary might mean to them.”

Free tickets are still available for the ‘Royal Albert Hall’ style centenary service in the Grand Hall at Scarborough Spa on Saturday 10 November at 6pm. The service will pay tribute to all those who served in WWI and those who lost their lives in combat or as a civilian. The service will include performances by the York and Dishforth Military Wives Choirs, Tony Peers Singers and Scarborough Concert Band. Tickets are available from the Scarborough Spa Box Office, either online at scarboroughspa.co.uk or by calling 01723 821888.

The tickets can be printed off by purchasers that have access to a printer at home. An administration fee of £2.00 per booking will be made for tickets collected from the box office or £2.50 per booking for tickets posted to the purchaser.
