Views Of LGBT Community Sought In East Riding

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 10:38am 24th October 2018.

Members of the LGBT Community in the East Riding of Yorkshire are being asked to share their experiences of discrimination.

They're being asked for their views on a range of issues including personal safety, experiences at work, education and in healthcare.

An online survey has been set up by East Riding of Yorkshire Council, aiming to find out more about life for LGBT residents in the area.

Earlier this week we told you Humberside Police has dealt with more homophobic hate crime incidents.

Between 2017/18, 150 people reported homophobic hate crime to the force, an increase of 42% compared to the 12 months before.

In July, police in Bridlington launched a hate crime investigation after a flag pole at the town's police station, flying the Pride Rainbow Flag, was cut down and vandalised by a group calling themselves 'Men of Bridlington.'

Those answering the online survey should be:

  • lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex, or have a minority sexual orientation or gender identity
  • 16-years-old or over
  • living in the East Riding.

Councillor Shaun Horton, cabinet portfolio holder for community involvement and council corporate services, said:

“Recently, the Government undertook a survey to learn more about the experiences that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people have living in the UK.

Locally, we want to collect as much information as possible. After the survey closes, the council will analyse the results and use them to inform its LGBT needs assessment work and plans to improve LGBT equality in the East Riding.

The survey is anonymous and takes around 15 minutes to answer. Respondents don’t have to answer every question if they don’t want to and can complete the survey in one go, or save their answers and come back to it later.”

The survey will run until Friday, 30 November.
