The owner of the Scarborough News, Bridlington Free Press and Whitby Gazette has put itself up for sale.

Johnston Press has struggled with revenues in recent times.

It has a debt of around £220 million, which has to be re-paid next year. The company started a strategic review of it's finances in March 2017. In a statement to shareholders today the company has stated.

"in order to assess all strategic options to maximise value to its stakeholders, the Board of Johnston Press announces today that it has decided to seek offers for the Company."

The Company says it is not in discussions with any potential buyers at the moment.

In a letter to shareholders Johnston Press expressed it's desire to try and sell the company as a single entity. The group owns around 200 titles including the i newspaper, The Yorkshire Post and the Scotsman,  It's likely that rival publishers may be interested in bidding for specific titles that fit with their existing operations which could lead to the breaking up of the group.

The Scarborough Evening News was first published in 1882, as a daily paper.

It was re-launched in 2012, as a weekly edition.
