Scarborough Town Hall Entrance To Open "By End Of This Year"

Scarborough Town Hall

Published by the Yorkshire Coast Radio News Team at 6:07am 21st September 2018. (Updated at 12:35pm 21st September 2018)

"It's our intention to have the main door of Scarborough Town Hall open as soon as possible."

That's the call from Councillor Heather Phillips, Cabinet Member for Transformation, with a decision due to be made today on selecting a contractor for the 'Smart Access Control System' at the Town Hall.

In March, we told you that the borough council had introduced security measures at the building, locking the main door and making the only available entrance to visitors through Customer First.

The council never specifically told us why the security measures were put in place, however at the time it said:

“A recent review of access arrangements to Scarborough Town Hall has resulted in some changes to how members of the public, who are attending meetings or appointments, enter the building."

The new Smart System at the Town Hall will see all officers and members receive new ID badges which will also allow access into council buildings.

The report states that the current control system is over 30 years old, with the new system also being extended to Dean Road Depot and other council buildings.

A new visitor system will also be in place, based at the Civic Reception area, which will involve temporary photo ID badges.

Councillor Phillips said:

"Most of our first contact, is in Customer First. The people who are coming in through the Town Hall entrance are those who have booked appointments with officers or councillors.

It will mean that Customer First is easier for other people to use, because there won't be as many people in there and if you have business in the Town Hall, you can get in quicker.

Hopefully, we are expecting, by the end of this calendar year to be fully functioning again, with the front door open at the Town Hall."
