Make Public Spaces in North Yorkshiree Smoke-Free

Published by Jon Burke at 2:45pm 14th September 2018.

North Yorkshire County Council has re-opened its Smokefree Places Fund for organisations responsible for public spaces.

The Smokefree Places Fund was launched last October by the County Council as part of its work to promote a smoke-free lifestyle. The Council is an active member of Breathe 2025, the organisation which campaigns “to see the next generation of children born and raised in a place free from tobacco, where smoking is unusual”.

Executive Member for Public Health, Prevention and Supported Housing, County Councillor Caroline Dickinson, said:

“Across England, there are already many smoke-free public spaces, including play areas; school gates; beaches and town squares. Smoke-free places set positive role models for children, help to encourage a smoke-free lifestyle and reduce cigarette litter.

Applications for funding are welcomed from any organisation responsible for public spaces which is permitted to allocate places as smoke-free. Funding can be used for community events, signs and events to promote a smoke-free lifestyle.”

Applicants will need to demonstrate that there is a problem with smoking behaviour in their area; that they are able to involve their community and deliver the promotion of a smoke-free lifestyle, for example signage.

To find out more and to apply for funding, visit and log on to register a new account. The closing date is 31 October 2018.

The County Council also funds a service to help smokers who wish to stop. Called Smokefreelife North Yorkshire, it offers a free, flexible support package to suit the individual.

Smokers wanting to stop can attend clinics, drop-ins, receive nicotine replacement therapy or talk to specialist advisers over the phone. Visit, call 0800 2465215 or 01609 663023 or text QUIT to 66777 to find out more. It is also an e-cigarette-friendly stop-smoking service.
