A developer has submitted plans to build 10 new apartments on land where a bank once stood in Scarborough.

Fernhill Developments Ltd has lodged plans with Scarborough Borough Council for land in Scalby Road, to the rear of the former Natwest bank branch, which closed its doors in 2015.

The bank itself has permission, granted in 2016, to be converted into a funeral home and dwellings, and is separate from the new bid.

In the planning document, it states that:

“The proposed new development comprises of the erection of a new 342m² 10 home apartment block containing two one-bed flats and eight two-bed flats positioned to the south west of the site.

The remaining site will be altered to accommodate access, parking, a bin store and the introduction of soft landscaping.”

The design will include a lot of glazing and wood in order to make it fit in with the existing street scene.

The plans have now gone out to public consultation.

After the closure of the Natwest branch supermarket giant Sainsbury’s submitted an application to turn the building into a store.

However, more than 400 people objected, including Scarborough-based retailer Proudfoot, which has a store directly opposite the bank.

Scarborough Council’s planning committee backed its residents and threw out Sainsbury’s plans after concerns were raised about the increase in traffic and vehicle access to the site.

Proudfoot later submitted, and got, permission for the funeral home, which now operates from the bank site.
